Reflexology
Reflexology
is a natural and non-invasive Complimentary Therapy that works
with the feet or hands. It aims to clear vital energy pathways
that have become blocked and are in a state of imbalance therefore
preventing the body from functioning effectively - this may
be due to illness, stress, injury or disease. Reflexology can
help to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium
and encourage healing.
History
of reflexology
Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China but
it wasn’t until 1913 when a doctor named William Fitzgerald
introduced “Zone Therapy” to the west. In the 1930’s,
Gunice Ingham further developed this therapy into what is now
known as Reflexology. According to William Fitzgerald (1872-1942) “Reflexology
is the application of specific pressures to reflex points in
the feet and hands”
How
does it work?
A reflexologist uses their hands to apply pressure to reflex
points on the feet that correspond with areas in the body. This
allows them to detect imbalances in the feet, release the blockage
and restore the flow of energy to the body. Tensions are eased,
and circulation and elimination is improved.
Who
Can Benefit from Reflexology?
As reflexology treats the whole person, not just the symptoms
almost everyone can benefit from treatment, including babies
through to the elderly. It brings relief to a wide range of acute
and chronic conditions, stress related conditions, sleep disorders,
sports injuries and is also used widely as a preventative therapy.
Specific
conditions include:
- Back pain
- Headaches
- Infertility
- Arthritis
- Digestive
Disorders
- Stress
related conditions
- Pregnancy
- Allergies
- Constipation
- Cystitis
- High blood
pressure

A
Treatment: What to Expect
On your first visit there is a preliminary talk that allows the
practitioner to build up a picture of your present and past health
and establish the reason you wish to have reflexology.
During the treatment gentle pressure is applied to the feet or
hands if necessary, noting problem areas. There may be discomfort
in places, but it will be fleeting, and it is an indication of
congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body.
For most part, the sensation is pleasant and soothing. Reflexology
will relax you while stimulating the body’s own healing
mechanisms.
A
treatment usually lasts about an hour and a course of treatment
may be recommended depending on your body’s needs.
After
treatment most people feel a sense of well being and relaxation,
sometimes people feel lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this
is transitory and is a part of the healing process.
